The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) offers more than 50 majors and thousands of courses spanning health and human behavior, ethics and culture, data science, environmental sustainability, and more. Students can discover new perspectives, tailor their education to their interests, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a wide range of careers.
Undergraduate Programs
Majors
Students at the Storrs campus have access to the full range of degree programs offered by CLAS, providing the flexibility to explore diverse academic interests while pursuing specialized fields of study.
At UConn’s regional campuses, students can complete the following degree programs:
- Avery Point: English, General Studies, Marine Sciences, Maritime Studies, Psychological Sciences
- Hartford: English, General Studies, Human Development and Family Sciences, Individualized Major, Psychological Sciences, Urban and Community Studies
- Stamford: Communication, Economics, English, General Studies, History, Human Development and Family Sciences, Political Science, Psychological Sciences, Sociology
- Waterbury: American Studies, English, General Studies, Human Development and Family Sciences, Psychological Sciences, Urban and Community Studies
Minors
Students may choose to complete one or more minors, although a minor is not required for graduation. Minors are available through many CLAS departments, as well as through other schools and colleges across UConn. Find more information on the undergraduate catalog website.
Rules for Minors
- Minors consist of 15-18 credits and the requirements for each minor vary.
- Students must meet the requirements of the minor per the University Catalog.
- By rule, transfer credits cannot be applied to a minor without permission of the Academic Dean’s Office.
- Students MUST earn a grade of “C” (2.0) or better in each one of the courses required for the minor, unless a higher standard is noted in the specific minor program.
- Some minors might have course overlap restrictions with courses for the major.

Double Majors and Additional Degrees
Students interested in declaring a double major or an additional degree, or who would like to learn more about the differences between a double major and a dual degree, should schedule an appointment with the CLAS Academic Services Center.
Double Major
A double major allows students to complete two majors in different departments or academic plans within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Students must fulfill the requirements for both majors and will earn the degree associated with their primary major. If one of the majors leads to a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, students are expected to complete the BS requirements for both majors, unless a BS option is not available for one of them.
Double major requirements
Students must complete:
- A Double Major Declaration Form (see below for details).
- All major requirements for both majors.
- A minimum of 48 major credits at the 2000+ level without overlapping (The major consists of the 2000+ level coursework required to complete each program, for example 24 unique credits of SOCI + 24 unique credits of WGSS).
How to Declare a Double Major
- Fill out a Double Major Declaration Form.
- Obtain approvals from the major advisor of both programs of study.
- Return completed form to CLAS Academic Services Center (ROWE 130) for a signature from the dean’s designee.
Additional Degree
An additional degree allows students to complete majors in two different schools or colleges at UConn.
While both degrees may be earned within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students more commonly pursue a second degree in another UConn school or college. Students can earn a second degree either concurrently or after earning their first degree.
Students pursuing an additional degree must complete all requirements for each degree and earn at least 18 credits beyond the degree with the higher minimum credit requirement.
Additional degree requirements
Students must:
- Meet all requirements for both degrees.
- Complete 18 unique additional credits more than the degree with higher minimum (e.g. School of Nursing and CLAS, CLAS requires 120 credits to graduate, 120 + 18 = 138 credits to graduate with both degrees); the only exception is for students in the Teacher Education Program offered through the Neag School of Education.
- All 18 credits for the additional degree must be at the 2000 level or higher.
Additional degree requirements for Teacher Education students
CLAS Majors
The University Senate modified the requirements for an additional degree for teacher education students. If qualified, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) in addition to the Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Students are eligible if they meet all general education AND subject area requirements. For CLAS students, in addition to the major requirements, all students must have 12 credits of 2000-level or higher related courses (subject to CLAS faculty advisor approval). The CLAS faculty advisor may count one or more Education courses toward the related requirement; they may also require students to take additional courses. For example, the mathematics department would like to see one or two 2000-level chemistry, physics or statistics courses.
Timeline
Students must complete all coursework for the additional degree by the end of the spring semester of the master’s year. Otherwise, this will delay the master’s year graduation and the processing of certification until late August.
Process
Students cannot apply for the Additional Degree for Teacher Education Students until after admission to the Neag School of Education. CLAS students who wish to receive pre-teaching advising, while maintaining their CLAS major and advisor, can do so through the ACES program. To designate your pre-teaching interest, please contact the ACES office. The “Pre-Teaching” major will be added to your record and you will be assigned an ACES advisor who will work with you while you pursue admission to the Neag School of Education.
Similarly, an ACES student who wishes to declare a major in CLAS and begin working with a CLAS major advisor can do so by contacting the appropriate CLAS department. The CLAS major and advisor will be added, along with the Pre-Teaching major and ACES advisor, to the student’s record. How to Declare an Additional Degree
- Complete parts I and II of the Additional Degree Petition Form.
- Bring form to the major department of the additional major that is being added to obtain an advisor’s signature.
- Return completed form to CLAS Academic Services Center (ROWE 130) for a signature from the dean’s designee.
Note: You will receive two degrees, one from each college and/or school.
